Day 28

It is Friday!!

As the systems were back up today I had a lot to catch up on.
Starting with changing some descriptions on items, there was a list to change.

Then I had to finish my carry over sheet and forward factor how many units we would have of certain lines.

Ten this afternoon I started on the WSSI assignment Amanda gave me. I enjoyed starting this as it gave me a chance to show off what I know and how I want to progress.
As it was quiet today at 5 o'clock I was told I could leave!

Overall not a bad Friday!

Thursday 7 February 2013

Day 27

Today there was a lot to get on with.

Starting with going through emails I got back about deliveries.
I then sat with Jane and went through the critical path and made sure there were no delays she knows about that I don't.

I then started on the carry over sheet. This is a document that has to be done for one of the directors to approve whether we can carry over certain lines to the next season. This involved working out what stock we would have in 16 weeks time, if sales continued the way we hope.

This afternoon I sat with Amanda and she went trough the WSSI with me, this is a document that has everything in. Sales, stock, intake, markdown, etc she gave me a task to go through it and try and fill it in. I have done this before when I was at the academy so would be good to see how much I remember and have learnt in that matter!

One of the buyers then sent me a list of description change he wanted so I started on those.

I can't believe it's Friday tomorrow though!!

Day 28 tomorrow...

Day 26

Today was an average mid day week.

I started by checking the history reports as these are used in future buys and we base a lot of out figures on these when planning. Luckily enough they were all in order and there wasn't much I needed to do.

I then moved onto checking I had replies from suppliers about their deliveries. All were fine but one (always the way!) their delivery was going to be delayed by about a month! After looking at the sales and the stock we have, we don't need the whole delivery anyway... We have asked to decrease the delivery by half, we will see what they come back with!

Then I had to make some changes to the period summaries as they needed some
figures tweaking, as this was the first attempt I had, I didn't think I did too bad :)

Lastly I had to go through all of my sections and update the grading as the buyer didn't realise this was changing and this determines how many stores the stock goes too.

Most of the day was doing whatever was thrown at me and I do feel like there is a lot I know already give me a few more weeks and I will be pro!!

Day 27 next...

Tuesday 5 February 2013

Day 25

Today was pretty busy.
I started by looking at what commitment was due and who I needed to chase, this took me a while as we're trying to find a quicker system.

Then our gifting buyer wanted some quantities on some masks but they will only be on store for 5 weeks, and can only go to certain stores! I was trying to work it all out but in the end we just looked at what they had available and what we thought would work!

Then we have what we call period summaries, to note down anything that might help in the future such as being short on stock or something outside of work. They haven't been updated for the past 2 periods and therefore I had to lo back and try to fill them in.

Tomorrow first thing that needs doing is the history reports, Amanda has found faults in some of them and we need to go back over them and make sure the information is accurate.

Day 26 tomorrow...

Day 24

And it's Monday again...

This morning it was my turn it print all the line prints and markdown reports, I got in at 7.30 to do this as the printers get jammed or there's a que because everyone wants to print!
Once the packs were printed and out, I sat and as usual went through my pack and made notes. I really enjoy doing this as now I am getting to know the product I know the descriptions and know which ones would sell and which ones wouldn't! Then we had our usual trade meeting this week there was some regrading but overall most of the deliveries are due in te next few weeks so its a case of making sure they are on waters and will be on time!

I put together the list of markdowns to be sent over and approved.
Mondays always go quick as there is always a lot to do, but they are tiring too!!

Day 25 later today...

Friday 1 February 2013

Day 23

Today was a pretty relaxed day. My merchandiser and assistant merchandiser have been off on holiday.

I had a couple of things to get in with though! I started my day with chasing a few people up on things they should have done and therefore I could do what I needed too.
I regarded some belts which were blocked on the system due to reprocessing and updated my delivery/ critical path for my own benefit.

Then I sat with one of the buyers and she taught me how to raise orders for an hours then have me a list to go and do. I am glad I know even though its not part of my role, it means if I moved departments I might have to!
I then went through my critical path and showed her everything is still running in time.

I then sat with Ben and he finished off my training and went through some stuff I still need clarification on.
I do feel pretty confident now considering I have been here 3 weeks!!

I then really wanted to file things away and get organised as there is no system in place for anything!
I am now ready for the new assistant merch to start on monday!

Day 22

Today was an interesting day!
I came in and wanted to start on the glasses line projection and get that sorted for Amanda this morning. I thought I had completed what I thought was right so showed her. She was happy with most of it but some of it she changed a little, which I totally agree with as this is the first time I have done so!!

I worked out the deliveries and sent them over so the buyers could raise them. I enjoyed doing this as again I haven't done it before!

After this I had a one-to-one with Amanda where she said she was very happy with the way I work and should keep going! I am so much happier at Primark and it is a great place to work!! You always have the feeling at a new job that you aren't doing to well or your not sure so it was good to be told!

This afternoon I a few admin jobs to do such as filing and tidying up some of the systems. This means changing a few descriptions on product so they look correct on the paper work and reporting.

To finish off my day I went back through my deliveries and made sure they were all booked in and coming in at the right time.

Day 23 tomorrow...

Day 21

I was so tired last night I didn't even get a chance to write!
It was a busy day, we had a strategy meeting for my departments so hats, scarfs, jewellery, bags all 'true accessories'. We were sat in the meeting room for about 3 hours. It was great to see all the new AW13 product though! The hats are absolutely amazing!!

But because if these meetings it was my responsibility to print off all the packs which actually takes longer than you think!

This afternoon I had to do some size analysis on some belts as the supplier made the wrong ratio and we had to decide how we wanted the stock.

Then I moved onto the planning of some glasses. This is a lot harder than I thought! There is so much to bare in mind, such as stock, when deliveries can come in, cover, open to buy and how many stores it is going to this year!

I will relook at this morning to make sure I am happy with it and then show y merchandiser.

Day 22 later on today...

Tuesday 29 January 2013

Day 20

Today was a busy day!
Wasn't sure I was going to get everything done!
I started by finishing off the last of the socks analysis to send to the buyer. At least that was one thing to tick off my list.
Then I wanted to finish off the other lessons learnt packs for the meeting tomorrow but could only do half of it as the buyer for accessories needed to finish his bits before I could do mine.

Half way through doing this, of course other things came up. My merchandiser asked me to set up a new line projection for some glasses, which actually is harder to do than I thought! Having to plan in sales when you haven't had the product before is difficult! This took me most of the day and it's still not 100%. Whilst doing this though I also had to chase in deliveries, this does take a while as there are so many different departments.

This afternoon though, me and one of the other girls went out to buy birthday decorations for put director as his birthday is tomorrow!

Monday 28 January 2013

Day 19

So it's Monday again, I made sure I was in early enough but get to the printers first!
Monday is always busy and everyone is always running around!
I had to print some of the packs and hand them out to the team.

Once this was done I went through my packs and made notes on my departments ready for the trade meeting. When it was time for the meeting it was my turn to go through the figures to everyone.
It was good to show off and that I know what is going on!

This afternoon, based on trade there are always things to do. I had some regrading to do as well as putting through the markdowns and hotboxing.

Then lastly I helped out with one last pack which is needed for tomorrow.

Day 18

End of my second full week!

Today I got on with finishing off some of the sock analysis, which took me a while!
I went through the daily sales and how to do them with Tanaka, it is hard as you have to forecast how much each department might take...

I then sat with 2 of the trainee buyers and went through the critical path and at what stage everything was at, so if there were any issues these could be sorted before the stock comes in late.
I am looking forward to next week as I feel like I am getting stuck in and actually know what I'm doing.

Lastly I sat with one of the buyers and went through the sunglasses grading to make sure there was enough stock. I went through the grading and changed what I could :)

Day 17

This week has absolutely flown by!! I started this morning with helping finishing off the accessories pack ready for the meetings.
Then I sat with Amanda and did the sizing for the belts and sent them over to the buying ready to be raised. I enjoy things like this as what I am doing does make a difference :)

This afternoon I started on some sock analysis, which you don't realise can be done in so much detail for socks until you look! For each style of sock a different age customer goes with it and therefore the correct sizing need to be bought to reflect this. I will continue with this tomorrow as well as sitting with my assisstant merch to do some more training.

I feel like I am getting on ok and am starting to understand how things work and I know what people are talking about when they ask me questions!

Day 16

Today has been interesting!
This morning I came in and started by looking at sunglasses and whether we had enough stock to keep us going... I know it is January!

At 10.30 we went over to the Reading Football Club to see the new range. This is something Primark do every 6 months to show the stores what to expect.
It was great to see all the product together! There are some really strong lines!

This afternoon I finished off looking at the sunglasses and then moved on to gathering information to size some of the belts that we are continuing for AW13. I will sit with Amanda tomorrow and go through this :)

Day 15

Today was a busy day!
I started with chasing the suppliers and getting stock in on time, if this isn't done then without stock we can't make the sales.
Then I sat with Amanda and as I now have access to the line projection system I was able to have a look at quantities for belts and how much stock we have and need going forward. This, surprisingly, took up most of my day. Purely because the system is one you need to get your head around. I spent it over to the relevant buyer for him to have a look at and see how he wants to go forward with this section.

I then sat with Louise, one of the other buyer to explain that socks in actual fact could be raised in boxes of 40 instead of 50.

I finished off by chasing some more commitment and have been set more tasks for tomorrow :)

Day 14

And it's Monday again...

Usually I would hate the beginning of the week but I am loving working at Primark!
I had to get in by 8 this morning as it was my turn to print the line details, which sounds easy but when none of the printers work it makes things really complicated!
Once the Monday packs were complete I went through all sections and made notes and looked at what we could action to maximise sales. As the trade meeting was cancelled today I still sat with Amanda and went through my findings and she was impressed and asked me to present the figures next week!!

After this I was asked to regrade a few lines, which I knew what to do straight away!
I checked a few barcodes for suppliers as well.
I was then asked to look at some size ratios for socks, this sounds easier than it is! It took me a while as I had to take the stock we had already ordered and stock we already have into the mix! I checked it with Amanda and she was happy with it. The buyer also wants to have a look at it so tomorrow I will take her through this.

Day 13

So today turned into a snow day!! :D
I love the snow!

I still managed to finish what I wanted though! I start this morning with looking at the daily sales and making notes to go over with my merchandiser.
I then moved on to looking at the grading for some belt which are being discontinued at the end of the season. I was asked to look at the current grade, cover and stock and then make a judgement on whether to change the grading. This is something I have never done before so I am hoping it has been done correctly!

Lastly I checked some barcodes and sent some emails to suppliers to confirm the approval.

We then had a team lunch at Nando's and went home! The snow is pretty bad but I love it!!

Day 14 on Monday...

Thursday 17 January 2013

Day 12

So the week is nearly over and I am a little worried as tomorrow is my assistant merchandisers last day! This means I will have to work closer with my merchandisers over the next few weeks!

It has been a good day though, we had a meeting this morning and re-looking at ratio packs as a business. This is something most companies do on a regular basis as your customer does change and you have to keep then happy. It made me realise a lot about what I have seen in store and never really understood why they have done it.

I then sat with one of the buyers and kind of went over what they did and how involved I would be. The role is similar as it would be in most places but it was nice to talk to the buyer and just see what her take on the department was.
This afternoon I felt very smart! I helped the assistant merch with her spread sheets and I actually knew something she didn't! I like doing things like this as it shows them and myself I am able to do things :)
After this I sat with Amanda again and she has set me some projects to do, which I.am looking forward too. One is to print the daily sales we get and kind of talk her through them so she knows I understand them. She then asked me to start planning some of the belts. Some of the belts are being discontinued but we still have a lot of stock, I have been asked to look at the store grading and if it was up to me, would I extend the grading if so why? I am looking forward to this as I really want to prove I am made to be a merchandiser!

The last thing is to set up a spread sheet on excel so we can keep track on markdowns and how much we spend and work out future spend, so we can plan for these. This might be a little more tricky than the others but again I would have to do it at some stage so why not start now!

Day 11

Half way through the week... Already!!
Today I did quite a bit if training with my merchandiser, which was really good!
I started by going through what I have learnt yesterday to show I knew what I did! This was good as she is going to build on this next week and then let me take over the line projections, which in New Look I wasn't even aloud to open!

Then I finished off some more of the lessons learnt pack, which is now complete and ready to be shown before the boards... Scary!

This afternoon I sat with Amanda again and she went through the range catalog with me, this is something Primark do every 6 months with all of the store managers. They come in and show the next seasons stock, this is handy for the stores so they know what is due when.
Whilst I was there I went through the sign off catalog, again this is a lot more detailed than I have seen before but it helps more in meetings because it is so detailed! These meetings only happen ever 6 months and therefore a lot of the prep and ideas have been really thought through.

Before I knew it, it was 5.30 :)

Day 12 tomorrow...

Tuesday 15 January 2013

Day 10

My day started with tweaking the underwear pack for the lessons learnt meeting, which is this afternoon.
As I had training from 11-5 I was really annoyed with myself for not getting it finished!
I was told by my merchandiser that I had done really well considering being thrown in the deep end but still I hate having things half finished.

My training was all about LP which is the line projection system. This is so we can forecast what lines are going to sell, how much they will make and whether we have enough stock. It was a LONG day considering the laptops we were on didn't work!! But hey ho that's technology!
As I came back Amanda, my merchandiser, told me I can sit with her to go through everything and see where we can build. This is more than I was ever aloud to do in New Look! :)

Day 9

It's Monday again...
But for the first time in a long time, I didn't have any Sunday blues! I was looking forward to getting up! I got to the office for 8 just in case they needed my help and lucky for them I got there, the printers were being very slow and one of the girls was off sick.
After getting the Monday reports out to everyone I say down with my merchandiser and went through the packs and the looked at them the way she would. She told me in a few weeks I would be reading out the figures in trade so I needed to understand where to get them from.
The packs are pretty similar to others I have seen so it was easy to pick up. I spent most of the morning going through the pack and looking at each line.
Trade meeting was at 12 so with my merch and the buyers we went through the pack together and came up with some trade actions, such as calling stock in early.

This afternoon I sat with my assisstant merch and she showed me how to hotbox (prioritise stock) and some other bits I would normally do on a Monday. She is leaving on Friday but I feel it will be a good chance for me to step up even though I have only been here 2 weeks!

Tomorrow I have training on the WISSI system which I am looking forward to but it will be a lot to take in!!

Day 10 tomorrow...

Friday 11 January 2013

Day 8

So that's week number 1 over...

I could tell everyone was stressed today! Trying to get everything finished for the weekend. I managed a lot of the packs today, which was good as I managed to created pivot tables by myself and organise the information (I think I impressed my merchandiser). As one of the assistant merch's went home ill it was all hands on deck!!
Some people were more organised than others and therefore panicking a lot. I always think, if I need to stay I need to stay so there is no need to panic!

I was shown how to grade items, so if they need to be sent out to new stores are more stores I am able to do so. The system for this is very old and you have to navigate your way through with numbers and only use the keyboard!
I was also shown how to amend the currency on items which have already be raised and if we can save money on currency exchange of course you'll try!

There is only a little lift to do with the packs and my merchandiser was impressed I ha completed so much, which was good, I am really trying to impressed as I enjoy working there and everyone is really friendly!

Well, have a good weekend and day 9 on Monday!!

Thursday 10 January 2013

Day 7

The week is almost ever! I can't believe it! It's gone so quick!
Today has been another busy day, but I do prefer it. As I said last night I would worked on the strategy pack again today, which I have been but we have also had strategy meeting with the team. These meetings are to help the team understand what is going on but also have a look over the packs and if there is anything which need changing we are able to discuss then.
This morning I sat in on the underwear, gowns and pyjamas meeting. It was great to see all the product and get my head around the customer. It is absolutely pronominal the amount of money the department makes.

After the meeting it was lunch time so the meeting did last a good couple of hours! Throughout the meeting there were things that needed to be changed in the packs. I started working on these which I was happy with. I was also a little worried about treading on people's toes as there were a lot of formatting issues, such as boarders missing but I didn't want to stand anyone up! Whilst working on this though y merchandiser asked how I was getting on and so I mentioned this and she said that she is exactly the same and would have to change things!
So I have taking it upon myself to format everything!! Like she said if the formatting isn't correct how can you trust the information is?! (Just remember that and you will do fine)

Day 8 tomorrow...

Wednesday 9 January 2013

Day 6

Already half way through the week!
Today was crucial! The strategy meetings are tomorrow and the packs aren't completed yet... I did a lot of work on the underwear pack.
I completed the top line figures, copied over the period summeries and helped finished the best sellers.
As these packs are going to be shown in front of the board it is soooo important that they 100% right!

There are couple of little bits that need finishing up but overall they are nearly ready! Tomorrow, with the help of my merchandiser, I will be creating pivot tables to help with the rest. I am pretty good with excel, I know how to use vlookups and sumifs, if I have to, but pivot tables are not something I use often!!

Day 7 tomorrow...

Tuesday 8 January 2013

Day 5

Today was a very busy day!
On a Tuesday, as a department the merch team sit down and go through the tasks for the week and if someone needs more work or has too much to do it is then sorted.
As everyone is focusing on strategy for AW13 we have been focusing on getting the information packs together for the meetings.
I have been asked to complete packs for boxers, briefs and vests. I really enjoy doing all the analysis and numbers (just proves to me I have chosen the right path!). There are various reports which just need formatting but some of the others it was more about inputting the info to match back to the WISSI's, this always seems to go wrong!
I am going to spend more time on this tomorrow, to make sure they are correct!

Day 6 tomorrow...

Monday 7 January 2013

Day 4

Today was my first Monday and it felt a little strange not having to be in the office early! (Won't take long though)
First thing I set up some reports I was asked to do on Friday, this gave me a chance to use the systems and get use to them a bit... I still can't get over how much easier the systems are! They are brilliant!!

Once these reports were done it was just about time for the first trade meeting. This one was for all accessories, such as jewellery, hats, bags, belts, etc. in the meeting we went through by line what was performing and what may need some help. The difference in sales units is huge! For example one bag sold about 2000 units! It's mad! Also the amount of units they buy! I will have to get my head around the quantities.
After this meeting there were 2 more for shoes and underwear.
The trad meetings took up 3 hours of my day already.

In the afternoon, I was shown how to check kimballs will work in store and how to put markdowns through. Markdowns aren't done by us they get sent to someone else in the company who decides whether they are worth marking down.
I think again it is a better way of doing thing.

Day 5 tomorrow...

Friday 4 January 2013

Day 3

So today I was on shop floor again... My feet hurt!
I total forgot how much it takes it out of you to work on the floor! But I do miss it (a little). I got the chance to help out with some of the VM today, unlike at Burton they are a lot more lenient about where the stock can be displayed. The men's department was being completely turned around! This is due to all of the new spring summer stock coming in. We managed to changed the department within an hour!! Which I thought was pretty impressive!

This afternoon I helped do some replen on the department as it was looking very empty! I then helped tidy a little before being asked to go back to the office to set up my log ins.
Whilst waiting for IT I sat with one of the assistant merchandisers and she gave me some analysis to do on Monday, which is great as this is getting stuff ready for strategy and I did this kind of stuff for New Look as already know why it is important and how it should look.

I am soooo looking forward to completing a full week next week and really getting stuck in!

Day 4 on Monday...

Thursday 3 January 2013

Day 2

Day 2 was defiantly more active! I spent all day on shop floor and forgot how much it hurts your feet!

I am amazed at how organised and well run the shops are.
I started off by helping one of the departments with their delivery, which was interesting as each department only completes their own delivery. This is better than having one person complete the whole thing alone!
Once the delivery is done any excess stock is put away as soon as.

After helping on shop floor, I spent some time in the office looking at the reports and systems used. The replenishment system is better than any I have seen as the stores can choose their own deliveries. As the store has a delivery every day, the stock ordered will be in the following day.
This is done every morning after looking at the top 25 or even top 50 of needed. The store manager would ideally have everything on 1 weeks cover!! I am use to trying to be on 8- 10wks cover!
I was also shown how to adjust stock and look at any minus stock numbers, again these should be done every day as they affect stock take results.

Later in the afternoon I helped with recovery, which is standards and making sure everything is sorted and looks good on the floor.

I am on shop floor again tomorrow, looking at some more reports and systems they use in store.

Day 3 tomorrow!

Wednesday 2 January 2013

Day 1

That is day number 1 over with!
The day went soooo quick! But it was so much fun :)
A lot of the activities I will be doing are similar to what I was doing at New Look.
Today I tried to get to know the systems, which was hard as my log in wouldn't allow me on them!
Doing day to day tasks looks a lot easier than it did at New Look too! Mainly because the systems are a lot quicker and any amendments to orders are all done by the buyers, which is great!

I managed to do some size analysis for them on the thermals, this is good so I could show what I already knew.
I also know how to check the store grading on items, what to do when we are missing documents and can't process stock and how to check what is on commitment and therefore needs to be chased.
I do think it was a successful first day and I really enjoyed myself. I haven't met my assisstant merch yet as she is still on holiday, which is a bit of a bummer as I am spending the next 2 days downstairs on shop floor!

There is still a lot more to learn and I am def looking forward to learning it!

Day 2 tomorrow...

First day nerves

So I am currently sat in a cafe having a coffee as I am a little early! Typical, when you get an earlier train they are always on time!!

I am the kind of person who doesn't get nervous but today... I am feeling the nerves! I keep looking at the people walking in and can't help but wonder if they are the people I will be working with, even though there are a lot of places to work around this area!!

I am so excited at the fact I will be home pretty much an hour before I would normally!
I will be letting you know what I have done on my first day later on!

Bye for now!
